In a neighborhood where police don’t seem to care about much of anything, they seemed to care about photos being taken, even more than drugs being sold out in the open. As we moved from block to block, location after location, a police car seemed to stalk our movements, appearing frequently & watching from a distance. With a genuine dose of Southern slang that makes most black folks run for subtitles, the film blurs the lines between documentary and reality drama. The police however, they didn’t seem nearly as pleased. Snow on tha Bluff is probably what 90s hood films like Boyz N tha Hood (1991) and Juice (1992) would have been without million dollar budgets and celebrity casts. A quote can be a single line from one character or a memorable dialog between several. As we walked around the Bluff, it was clear that the neighborhood was almost as excited about the release as Curtis was. No quotes approved yet for Snow on tha Bluff. With the films release being scheduled for June 19th 2012, to DVD, Netflix, etc, Curtis is on the verge of hood stardom.

For fans of my work, this neighborhood is one of staples in my “Forgotten Atlanta” photo series, and is actually the inspiration behind the entire series. For those who are unfamiliar, the Bluff is often considered the worst neighborhood in Atlanta, and the 5th most dangerous neighborhood in the country (according to the 2010 FBI list.) It’s also home to Curtis Snow, and the backdrop for the reality based film.

This movie has captured the manifesto of the hood in the simplicity of a day-in-the-life type storyline. Cut to the same trio as they cruise the Bluff.

One opines that he would never want to live permanently in Atlanta, and muses about his future in New York City. Three twentysomethings stand atop Georgia’s Stone Mountain, scanning the vista with their digital camera. It is a painfully touching and brutally honest depiction of life in the Bluff, a story that has been dying to be told. S now on tha Bluff opens with a great fake-out.
